Amy Reads the Week (of June 8th, 2008)

Can't blog, Gentle Reader. New Avengers to read.

That is to say, Mr. Reads and I just discovered that the last issue of New Avengers I have read is issue 36. 36, Gentle Reader! I do not think we have had any Skrull revelations yet!

Or, perhaps, just one.

On the television front, This Humble Author is behaving Much Better. We are almost finished with all available DVDs for Foyle's War, which I cannot recommend highly enough.

Must go help Mr. Reads with the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers (and Initiative, and Young Avengers) Sorting, so that I may understand Secret Invasion a Bit More.

So, I have been out of comics proper for a couple of years now -- mostly because of the epic struggle between the proliferation of titles that I read and my monthly income. So, I quit cold turkey.

Despite the evident danger, I have been inspired to start reading a very controlled amount of titles. That said, and knowing that I am typically a Marvel fan (exceptions been BoP and GA) and really like the Avengers and Cap. -- what 5 titles would you suggest?

Hi Southpaw,
So, I have been out of comics proper for a couple of years now -- mostly because of the epic struggle between the proliferation of titles that I read and my monthly income. So, I quit cold turkey.

What a terrifying concept! Having quit something Cold Turkey Myself (cigarettes, how I miss you), I can definitely empathize.

Despite the evident danger, I have been inspired to start reading a very controlled amount of titles. That said, and knowing that I am typically a Marvel fan (exceptions been BoP and GA) and really like the Avengers and Cap. -- what 5 titles would you suggest?

5 Marvel titles?
New Avengers
New X-Men
Daredevil
Runaways
Astonishing X-Men (written by Whedon)

5 DC-and-imprint titles?
Wonder Woman (Gail Simone's run)
Batman (Morrison's run)
All-Star Superman
Welcome to Tranquility
JSA

If I had to cull 5 titles from those lists, knowing your tastes as I do, I would urge you to read:
New X-Men
New Avengers
Batman
Astonishing X-Men
All-Star Superman
with Welcome to Tranquility as an alternate.

Most should be available in trade, at least in part. Check your local library or ILL :)

Ciao,
Amy

PS Reading Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness. Thoughts?

Thanks for the lists. Two follow up questions: Is the current Cap title bad? Is The Ultimates still being published?

As far as the Le Guin: Not really a thought but a note. There is a town in southwestern Wyo called "Kemmerer" and pronounced "Kemmer" -- accident? I think not. I have not quite figured out the connection between the small town and the process of sexual transformations.

I certainly enjoyed it and I know it gets taught a lot. But, honestly, it has been a while since I read it.

The LeGuin that I find the most powerful is a very short story called "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" A quick google search will bring up a PDF of it -- ~7 pages.
